On Sunday, I drove north to Jupiter to see my beloved Cardinals take down the Marlins in a spring training game. There were occasional showers, but most of the time it was sunshine and the crack of bats. It was weird seeing Berkman at first base, but he played well, and David Freese, of course, saved the day with a three-run homer in the eighth. Like a boss. I missed my beloved Skip Schumaker, out with another oblique injury, but all the familiar faces (Yadi, Motte, Jay, even Rzepczynski, known better as Scrabble) were there.

All in all, one of the best days I’ve had in a while. Go cards.

280 years ago • President George Washington — our first president — was born Feb. 22, 1732. His birthday became a legal federal holiday on Jan. 31, 1879. Although it’s often referred to as Presidents Day (the grammar conscientious should note there’s no apostrophe), the official name of the holiday is “Washington’s Birthday.” (Some federal agencies, states and local governments use Presidents Day.).

This also is why the banks are closed, there’s no mail and and many schoolchildren and government employees have the day off. And it’s an excuse for patriotic sales.

Happy 248th birthday, St. Louis! The city was founded Feb. 15, 1764, when Pierre Laclede sent Auguste Chouteau, 14, and 30 workers upstream to begin clearing land. There was nothing momentous about the founding day, just he wielding of crude iron tools. Laclede joined them in April and named the village after St. Louis (French King Louis IX), patron saint of the reigning king of France, Louis XV.
