– Laura Coppinger, the actress who played the St. Charles Christmas Traditions character the Sugar Plum Fairy. Coppinger was fired because she cursed after she accidentally flushed — a no-no — while taking a city-mandated drug test. Home of the brave • Veterans Day honors those who have served in our nation’s military. The federal holiday was established to honor those who served in World War I and falls on Nov. 11, the anniversary of Armistice Day, which ended the war. Decades later, the holiday was extended to include all veterans.
Fairy dust-up • The Sugar Plum Fairy was fired. Laura Coppinger, who played the holiday sprite for six years during the Christmas Traditions festival in St. Charles, cursed while off-the-clock, and was fired for violating the Christmas Traditions code of conduct — specifically a section titled: “Christmas Characters Don’t know Naughty Words.”
Counting on you • The lingering economic crisis has more people asking for help. Layoffs and an inability to land new jobs have families in affluent suburbs looking for assistance for the first time in their lives. An additional 49,000 people were living in poverty last year compared to 2006, the year before the recession began, according to Census figures released in September. Over the next five weeks, the Post-Dispatch will profile 100 cases of people in our region who need a boost. They serve as examples of the 13,000 cases selected this year by area social service agencies based on various hardships.
We’ll take it • The Rams were beneficiaries of rare good fortune Sunday, with a potential game-winning field goal by Cleveland going awry on a fouled up long snap with 2 minutes 13 to play. The Rams were able to run out the clock and survive for a 13-12 victory over the Browns.

Lockdown continues • St. Charles High School was locked down about 9:15 this morning because of a threatening note, officials said. The lockdown is still in place, and police are searching the school room-by-room. St. Charles School District superintendent Randal Charles said students are being taken to the football field, passing through metal detectors as they evacuate. The district is posting updates and answering parents’ questions on its Facebook page.
Update: The lockdown was lifted at 1:45 p.m. No threat was found.

Navy blue(grass) • Guitarist Joe Friedman, on the left, was a successful musician, playing with orchestras for Broadway musicals, recording a solo jazz album and, for five years, touring with cabaret singer Eartha Kitt. But after Kitt died in 2008, Friedman needed a job. He auditioned and was hired on the spot as a guitarist for Country Current, a country and bluegrass band. The new job also meant he had to complete Navy boot camp.
Country Current will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Amphitheater in New Town St. Charles. The trip marks the first time Friedman has returned to the St. Louis area since he joined County Current and the Navy.
